Nursing home situation leads to abuse allegations

It can be challenging to keep close watch on the type of care being provided for an elderly family member in an assisted living facility. Many adult children in Georgia have full time jobs and other daily commitments that may keep them from being able to visit aging parents as often as they would like. One recent nursing home incident has led a particular family to sue due to suspected staff negligence that they say constituted elder abuse.

A 74-year-old woman died in March. When she died, she reportedly had serious pressure wounds and had suffered other adverse health conditions that her family believes were caused by inadequate nursing care. An attorney representing the family said the claim seeks to prove that nursing neglect not only caused the elderly woman excruciating pain but an untimely death as well.

In addition to acute pressure sores, possibly caused by not being moved or turned often enough in bed, the woman had severe difficulty swallowing. Her family claims she was left to lie in her own urine and feces for extended periods of time. Attorneys have also asserted that it appears the nursing facility employs untrained and unqualified staff members.

This particular nursing home, located in California, is typically given five stars in current rating systems. However, the claim filed by the now deceased woman's family says she was not even properly hydrated nor given adequate nutrition. An experienced elder law attorney is a good resource for anyone facing similar possible medical neglect situations in Georgia.
