When the time comes that you need to leave your home and live in a facility, it is a good idea that you have a plan in place. Being able to choose your own nursing home gives you control over the situation and enables you to ensure no matter what that your wishes are known.
The National Institute on Aging explains that you have to do your research when it comes to choosing an extended care institution.
Narrow down your needs
While you may not know right now what your exact medical and care needs will be when the time comes, you should have a general idea of what you want and do not want. For example, you may want to go somewhere that offers certain services or that has specific activities. You may know about specific needs, such as someplace with staff trained to assist with diabetic patients.
Contact different places
You should make a list of the facilities that meet your needs and contact them about a visit. You will want to check each place out in person. Make sure that you pay attention to the details on your visit. Check for signs of issues. Ask plenty of questions, too. Get to know as much as possible on your visit. You may even want to talk to a few residents as they can give you some insight into life there.
Make your final choice
It is probably best that you choose your top two or three facilities. You never know if they will have a vacancy when the time comes. You should make your loved ones aware of your choices. It also does not hurt to let them know places you do not want to go under any circumstances.
